Root Canal

Caring for Your Tooth After Root Canal Treatment

Mild soreness while the area settles is normal. Follow this guide for the first few days after your root canal treatment.

For the first 24-48 hours

  • Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your permanent filling or crown is placed.
  • Stick to soft foods and lukewarm meals.
  • Take any prescribed or recommended pain relief as directed.

Ongoing care

  • Brush and floss normally, being gentle around the treated tooth.
  • Avoid very hot or very cold foods and drinks for a few days.
  • Finish any prescribed antibiotics completely, even once you feel better.
  • Book your follow-up visit for the permanent restoration as advised.
Implant

Caring for Your Dental Implant After Placement

Some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort over the first 2-3 days is a normal part of implant healing.

First 24-48 hours

  • Apply an ice pack to the outside of the cheek to help control swelling.
  • Stick to a soft diet and avoid chewing directly on the implant site.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours after surgery.

During healing

  • Keep the area clean with gentle brushing; use any prescribed antiseptic rinse as directed.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol during the initial healing period.
  • Attend every follow-up visit so we can monitor healing and plan your final restoration.

First 48 hours — the 'white diet'

  • Avoid coffee, tea, red wine, dark sauces, and other staining foods and drinks.
  • Avoid tobacco products.
  • Avoid very hot or very cold foods and drinks if you notice sensitivity.

Maintaining your results

  • Some temporary sensitivity or mild gum irritation is normal and usually settles within a day or two.
  • Use a sensitivity toothpaste if it's recommended for you.
  • Brush twice daily and rinse with water after anything that could stain.
Extraction

Caring for Your Mouth After a Tooth Extraction

Protecting the healing blood clot for the first 24 hours is the most important thing you can do after an extraction.

Right after your appointment

  • Bite firmly on the gauze pad for 30-45 minutes; replace with a fresh pad if bleeding continues.
  • Avoid rinsing, spitting forcefully, or drinking through a straw for 24 hours.
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek during the first day.

For the next 2-3 days

  • Eat soft, cool foods and chew on the opposite side.
  • Do not smoke for at least 48-72 hours.
  • From day 2, gently rinse with warm salt water after meals.
  • Take pain relief and any prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed.

If complications arise

Severe or worsening pain, heavy bleeding that won't stop, high fever, or noticeable swelling after a procedure are not something to wait out — call us immediately, any day, 10 AM–10 PM.
